Elche streets flooded by over 10,000 pink shirts!

More than 10,000 people took part in the annual Amacmec run against breast cancer in Elche on Sunday morning.

The traditional race, which is organised by the Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer in the city (Amacmec), and now in its thirteenth edition, gathered on the Paseo de la Estación de Elche for the event that it is hoped will raise thousands of euros for cancer treatment and research.

There were two distances for the thousands of participants, over both 5km and 10 km courses. In addition, there were a number of parallel activities, the most popular of which was once again the Zumba demonstration which was provided by Amacmec’s own associates, some of them still receiving chemotherapy treatment.

During the event, many of the participants remembered family members who had passed away from cancer, but there were many more also who had managed to overcome the disease.

Other activities included youth dance groups, encouraged to attend by the beautiful sunny morning.

As the race leaders approached the finish line, the area around the Paseo de la Estación had become a large party in anticipation of their arrival. There was music as well as free refreshments, cocoa, fruit and water, and there were also a number of physiotherapists offering their services to those in need.

The amount raised is still to be determined so at this stage the board of the association has not yet decided how the money will be spent. What is certain, however, is that it will be used for both research against cancer and to finance Amacmec’s activities in the region.

We are currently in urgent need of Care Givers & Guardians for the older Children in the home
This is a new concept in Spain of care giving and guardians for these children offering them a place of safety in a loving home teaching them the skills they will need to become very successful young adults living in your homes as part of your family with you providing the education of life skills and giving human compassion something these children probably have never experienced. This does take a special kind of person but the rewards even though not financial are huge and we urge anyone who thinks they would be interested and would like further information on this to please contact us via email [email protected] please note anyone taking part in this scheme will be fully supported throughtout by fully qualified uk social workers in spain

People reading this have probably never heard of K2A. K2A (Kids to Adults) are a new charity, awaiting full registration, who work directly and solely with the director of Elche Childrens Home. K2A have been set up as a result of the discovery, purely by chance, that there is no training or support for the children leading up to the time that they leave the home at 18. There is no system in place to secure their well being and future in society this is where K2A will step in. They will provide training and ongoing support and care for these young people giving them life skills whilst learning the techniques needed to become a successful young adult and not reverting to the old life pattern they have come from. They have arranged instruction at the home for English, Guitar, Dance and Domestic Sciences (Cooking,Shopping, Budgeting, Cleaning etc.). They have also already managed to secure 3 part time positions of work and are looking for more. These position are at The Post Room, Benijofar - La Plaza Cafe, Benijofar and the Impact Charity Shop, La Marina. K2A are also currently looking for local businesses to offer these children, of 16+ years, Saturday work placements. They are so hard working and want to achieve and be a part of society. For those of you who are more familiar with the name of EMAUS, they were providing funding for the home but the contract with them has lapsed and they are no longer involved with them.

The day's winners

Tuesday 11th September 2012 – Stableford
Back after a long summer in Holland with its usual moderate climate and away from the extremely hot months that the bravehearts endured here at the Costa Blanca.

A big Thank You for John O’Brien who has been doing the reports during that long time and to Ray Housley for providing the necessary information to John when he couldn’t be there himself. Occasionally I could follow on internet what went on during the competition days. So, John and Ray, thanks again!

Today with temperatures in the twenties and 15 players – including one visitor, Kenny Reddington, who became a member at the end of the day – we went out for a straightforward Stableford match. My luck to start at the 8th with Frank, Hans and Ray, where Ray immediately made his intentions clear with a birdie.

Cheerfully he went from hole to hole, scoring each time, sometimes not even needing to put when he chipped the ball straight into the hole from way off the green and achieving an incredibly high score at the end. The rest of us lost some balls in the ponds or over the fences, the usual way of playing golf. Frank did well though with 33 to finish with.

At the presentation the NTPs were for Ian Henderson on the 2nd – first shot of the day – and for Ray Housley on the 5th hole, another birdie and 2 for 4 from a few inches away. Third was Dave Swan, hcp 12 and a score of 34 while in second we saw Gordon Abba, hcp 9 and a score of 36, a perfect handicap protection. First and of course way ahead as I told you already was Ray Housley playing of 10 and a score of 41! Chainsaw will need some extra time for cutting, if he can find it given the festivities this weekend.

Good luck for Charlie Stewart who will have to go to hospital on Wednesday and best wishes for Ian and his wife who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this weekend in Scotland. I really do admire that lady for coping all that time with him! Have a good time and enjoy your family.

Next Tuesday’s competition 18th September at El Plantio will be a team game, the Yellow Ball this time. Put your name down by the Monday before and make sure to be there on Tuesday on time well before 09.30, not to upset the draw. Enjoy!
